Port keeping strip mall closed

From The Times Herald-Record:
PORT JERVIS — City leaders say a rundown strip mall will stay closed until the owner brings them a plan to make it safe again.

The city had condemned the building at 100 Pike St. after workers at the Dollar General store thought the roof had collapsed during a Wednesday night rainstorm.

The roof hadn't collapsed, but city officials said they found a frightening list of hazards. Water poured from electric fixtures. Drop ceilings sagged under the weight of leaking rainwater and tiles crashed to the floor. An overflowing kiddie pool stood beneath a leak inside the former Great American store.

"It was quite obvious it was a dangerous situation," said city engineer Alfred Fusco.

Port Jervis officials condemned the building and conducted further inspections with a private engineer.

At an emergency meeting Friday, the Common Council voted unanimously to keep the building closed until the owner, KT Associates of Amawalk, brought them a complete engineering report.

The city says it has contacted the owner numerous times since February with requests to address code violations. City building official Wayne Kidney said they had hoped to avoid the current situation.

"We knew that if this happened the way it happened, we were going to be putting 100 people out of work," he said.

No one from KT Associates attended Friday's meeting, but the audience was filled with frustrated employees and owners of the strip mall's businesses.

"You guys just put me out of business, and now you walk away?" John Altadonna of Brother Bruno Pizza called to council members after the meeting.

The council members said they had no choice until the owner made the building safe again. ...read more...
